Kosovo mayor arrested for witness intimidation

The mayor of the southern Kosovo town of Kacanik Xhabir Zharku has been arrested on suspicion of intimidating witnesses in a court case, Pristina media report.

Zharku was arrested by Kosovo and EULEX police. According to TV Kohavision, the municipal president was arrested together with two other people suspected of witness tampering.

The arrests were confirmed to KTV by a EULEX police spokeswoman, who said that Zharku had been arrested in a joint operation by Kosovo and EULEX police.

Zharku was arrested on suspicion of the same crimes last November, but was released from custody before the case went to trial.

The municipal president is a member of Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's Democratic Party.
