UN ad hoc tribunal to prosecute organ traffickers

The proceedings in the case of human organ trafficking in northern Albania conducted by the EU special investigative team headed by U.S. Prosecutor John Clint Williamson could be launched before the international tribunal under UN auspices, Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic stated.

"During my recent meeting with Williamson in Brussels, the U.S. prosecutor agreed with my idea that a trial potentially staged outside Kosovo's territory should be held before an international court under UN auspices," Vukcevic told Tanjug.

Noting that the meeting was the most substantial one held so far, the Serbian prosecutor stated that he would be happy if an indictment is raised against certain individuals and if the trial is held outside Kosovo, before an international court.

Vukcevic also agreed to meet with EULEX Prosecutor from Canada Jonathan Ratel who is working on the case Medicus, since there is certain common ground in that case and the investigation into human organ trafficking in northern Albania and Kosovo-Metohija in the '90s which is being conducted by the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor's Office.

When it comes to the cooperation with Russia which is also investigating human organ trafficking in Kosovo-Metohija and northern Albania, Vukcevic said that the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor's Office serves as the mediator in the proceedings conducted by EUILEX and those performed by Russia because Russia does not recognize Kosovo's independence.

We have very good cooperation with Russia, but there is a problem with Kosovo because Russia does not recognize Kosovo's independence and will not issue its investigative materials to Ratel since EULEX is operating in Kosovo, Vukcevic said and added that Serbia's War Crimes Prosecutor's Office features as a partner in this case and Russia has agreed to release certain statements which Ratel requested.

Doctor Yusuf Sonmez from Turkey recently managed to flee from South African Republic because it does not recognize Kosovo's independence or EULEX legal system and it thus failed to react to the request for Sonmez's extradition, Vukcevic stated.
