Nikolic: Pristina should be willing to change laws

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said during his meeting with Head of EULEX Mission Bernd Borchardt in Belgrade Tuesday that Serbia's senior state officials have the resolve to achieve a lasting and just solution to the problem of Kosovo through the negotiations with representatives of the interim institutions in Pristina.

The Serbian president stressed that "the negotiations (between Belgrade and Pristina) are difficult, because the laws that were passed by the provisional institutions in Pristina are taken as an axiom; and for the problem of Kosovo to be solved, it is necessary to demonstrate willingness to change those laws, just as Serbia is ready to pass new laws,” the president's press service said in a release Tuesday. Nikolic also added that a community of Serb municipalities in Kosovo would replace the parallel Serb institutions in the southern province. Borchardt noted that the EULEX mission is status neutral and that its aim is to establish an ordered society in Kosovo based on the principle of helping everyone, a process that requires cooperation between the mission and all important actors. Nikolic said that Serbia needs the EULEX mission and offered EULEX full cooperation on the part of the Serbian government, the release said. Borchardt, who arrived for his first official visit to Belgrade on Monday, also met with Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, Director of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo Aleksander Vulin, EU ambassadors, and representatives of civil society and the media.
