Failure to reach deal can affect security in Kosovo

Chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs Dusan Bajatovic warned on Wednesday that if Belgrade and Pristina failed to reach an agreement, that could affect the security situation in Kosovo.

In a statement to Tanjug, Bajatovic noted that, in that case, Albanians could resort to various kinds of pressure- ranging from provocation to violence against Serbs and other non-Albanians. “If we came to a halt in negotiations, an extremist part of the Albanian population could conclude that is their chance, and not only increase pressure on Serbia, but also on political structures in Kosovo,” he said, noting that there are Albanians who are disgruntled over the fact that Pristina is negotiating with Belgrade at all. Noting that there are security risks and challenges, Bajatovic underlines that in that case, the international community must be ready for an adequate response. He stressed that the countries which assumed certain duties under UN SC Resolution 1244 should take care about the security in Kosovo, primarily the security of Serbs and members of other non-Albanian communities.
