EU: Ban Ki-moon's report enables EULEX deployment

The European Union Presidency welcomed on Friday the report by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the reconfiguration of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), and assessed that the document would enable a smooth and gradual deployment of the European EULEX mission.

"We welcome the report by the UN secretary general and his proposal on the body's reconfiguration, because it is in the interest of the entire international community that there be no security gaps and that a continuation of international presence be provided for in Kosovo", a ranking official of the Slovenian EU Presidency told a press briefing in Brussels, adding that the report would also enable, as he put it, "a smooth and gradual deployment of EULEX throughout Kosovo".

The official also underlined that the EU had made all necessary preparations for EULEX deployment, but that no agreement had been reached in the UN so far as to how that would be realised.

Meanwhile, Ban admitted after a meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London that his plan for the reconfiguration of Unmik might not be acceptable to all but that "this was the option to which the least complaints can be addressed".

"I am fully aware that this package might not fully satisfy all sides", Ban said.

Ban submitted his proposal in letters to Belgrade and Pristina, as well as in a report to the UN Security Council, which is due to discuss it next week.
