Solana: New York decisions speed up EULEX deployment

European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana said on Thursday that the latest New York decisions made it possible, in close cooperation with the United Nations, to speed up the deployment of the EU civilian mission in Kosovo (EULEX) and to give it an important role in Kosovo affairs.

"We welcome the report by the UN secretary general on UNMIK's activities in Kosovo and we back his plan on the change  of the format of international civilian presence in Kosovo," Solana said.

At the UN Security Council session which was held in New York last Friday, Serbia and Russia opposed the deployment of EULEX without a corresponding approval of the Security Council and Belgrade.

"The EU intends to play a leading role in the matters that deal with Kosovo, particularly in the field of rule of law", Solana underlined.
