Tadic: UNMIK reconfiguration illegitimate

Serbian President Boris Tadic has said that he has informed the head of the United Nations that any changes to the size or role of the U.N. mission in Kosovo requires a Security Council resolution and Serbian approval.

"The reconfiguration of the civil presence in Kosovo must be carried out with Serbia's permission if we are to respect the principles on which the international community is based today," Tadic said in Athens.

He said that he would be talking again with Ban and other international officials regarding a proper solution to this problem.

Tadic said that the Serbian government did not want to push Serbia into isolation, but to solve the Kosovo problem through negotiations with international officials.

"The principle we will continue to insist on is that we do not recognize Kosovo independence in any form," Tadic said.

The Serbian president argued that "the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo has disappointed all those who have worked hard to consolidate peace in the region."

He said his country "has already ruled out military solution in the province, does not demand any sanctions and advises Serbs of the region to stay there."

"Kosovo will unite with the world community through us, with serious consultations which will result in a compromise," President Tadic added.
