Danchenko: Idea on resumption of negotiations realistic

Research Analyst at the Brookings Institution in Washington Igor Danchenko has assessed that the idea on the resumption of negotiations on the future status of Kosovo is realistic, having in mind the fact that only a small number of countries have recognised the unilaterally proclaimed independence of the southern Serbian province.

According to Resolution 1244, the idea about the resumption of negotiations on Kosovo is quite realistic, bearing in mind the  fact that up to now, only 40-45 countries of almost 200 UN member states have recognised Kosovo independence, Danchenko explained.

In an interview, he said that the possible form of the negotiations could represent a challenge, noting that although the old format had proved as efficient from time to time, it could no longer be used, particularly not in the light of the fact that Russia had not been invited to a round of the Troika's talks.

By advocating support to international law and the protection of the concept of sovereignty, Russia is backing the Serb aspirations regarding Kosovo and encouraging a number of indecisive countries to reexamine their stand on Kosovo in the context of possible far fetching consequences, Danchenko concluded.
