The dispute over the SAA and its links with the Kosovo issue had led to the breakup of the former coalition led by ex-Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and to early elections.
The new governing coalition of Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic decided to include in the ratification the amendment proposed by the opposition Serb Radical Party (SRS).
The amendment said that Serbia, as the legal successor to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, understands the SAA provisons as confirmation that the Agreement does not jeopardize the territorial integrity of Serbia, and in particular the status of the province of Kosovo and Metohia as an integral part of Serbia, which is guaranteed under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.
