"NATO does not deal with Kosovo's status. A number of allies have recognized Kosovo, some did not, but they are both working here today", Scheffer said at the end of the one-day visit to Pristina.

He said that "UNSC resolution 1244 is very important for Kfor" and that, although former UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari had informed the North-Atltantic Council about his plan, "this plan was never on the table nor adopted by the Council".

Nevertheless, Scheffer said that NATO would train the Kosovo Security Force and that it will "help create a ministry which will control this process".

The Kosovo Security Force is one of the key security proposals of the Ahtisaari plan.
