Solana: Kosovo talks “better than expected”

The EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana said in Luxemburg he had informed the EU minister about the results of the Brussels round of direct talks between Belgrade and Pristina, and argued that the Troika-led negotiations process on Kosovo had been “better than expected”.

"This was not a bad meeting (...) the talks are better than expected", Solana said.

"The talks are bringing some fruit (...) but we cannot guarantee final success", he added.

The EU foreign policy chief said his primary goal was to maintain EU unity, in particular regarding a future ESDP mission to Kosovo.

"This is something the EU wants, it is something the UN wants, and I am in daily contact with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on finding the legal mechanisms to send the mission", Solana said.

In Luxemburg, the EU ministers expressed support for the Troika process and urged "both parties to engage in the remaining negotiations with creativity, boldness and in a spirit of compromise and to make every effort to secure a negotiated settlement of the status of Kosovo."
