Kosovo Security Force to be delayed until January

The transformation of Kosovo’s Protection Corps (TMK) into the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) will not begin on December 10, due to problems with the appointment of a commander-in-chief

The process is now scheduled to start in January.

The KSF, a provision of the Ahtisaari plan, has not received any UN backing but is set to be trained by NATO.

However, even within NATO, member states which did not recognize Kosovo, such as Spain, are highly sceptical about the new force as they oppose all attributes which could imply Kosovo's statehood.

The KSF would not be an army, but it would perform duties such as riot control.

The TMK is made up mostly of former members of the Albanian separatist guerilla - the KLA.
