Serbs responded by hurling stones and setting four Albanian-owned shops in fire, and gunfire was heard, before Kfor intervened to calm the situation.

The life of the victim, Nikola Bozovic, is not in danger and he is under intense care at the hospital of northern Kosovska Mitrovica following an operation.

An international investigation is under way.

This was the second incident in three days in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, which is populated mainly by Serbs, but which is also home to an Albanian-populated district.

Previously, on Sunday, three Albanians attacked a police patrol and attacked its three members - a Serb, a Bosniak and an Albanian.
