European Commissioner for enlargement Olli Rehn warned that Kosovo’s status should not be settled by unilateral declarations or unilateral veto threats, but by effective and responsible multilateralism.

"We Europeans are ready to turn every stone for a negotiated solution", Rehn said.

He argued that Kosovo will be a "severe test of the EU's credibility and capacity to deal with security challenges on its own continent".

"As Europeans we are bound to take responsibility for this issue. It is  above all a challenge for Europe. Neither Russia nor the United States is so directly affected by what happens in the Balkans as we Europeans are (...)  If the status process should fail, Europe would pay the price", the European commissioner stressed.
