Zannier in New York, Belgrade-Pristina talks unlikely

UNMIK Chief Lamberto Zannier has departed for the UN Headquarters in New York to attend a regular annual meeting of all UN heads of missions with the chief of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and other UN officials, UNMIK sources say.

Zannier's recent initiative on possible talks, albeit technical, between Pristina and Belgrade has infuriated Albanian authorities, which insist they wont talk to Belgrade unless Serbia recognizes the independence of Kosovo.

The Serbs, on the other hand, find unacceptable the participation in the talks of European Union Special Representative (UNSR) in Kosovo Pieter Feith, since his task is to implement the plan of Martti Ahtisaari, rejected by the UN Security Council and Belgrade and fiercely insisted upon by Pristina.

Peter Feith's spokesperson Julia Reuter declared it was impossible to force any of the sides to participate in talks.
