"We believe that it is in the interest of the region for Kosovo to be a democratic country and with that to contribute to the stability of the region. That means we are urging countries to recognize Kosovo and to explain their position in favor of the independence," said Munter.

Munter said that US policy toward Serbia will not change under the Obama administration.

Munter declined to acknowledge whether US is actively lobbying other countries to recognize Serbia's Kosovo province but noted that "surely there are people from the international community that are helping Kosovo authorities and that US is doing everything that it can to make sure Kosovo becomes a successful state."
