Tadic: Kosovo compromise needed
Serbian President Boris Tadic said in a newspaper interview Thursday that he wanted a compromise with Kosovo leaders over their independence declaration but insisted they must come back to the negotiating table.

"We are in favor of negotiations that will lead to a real compromise solution, a viable solution," Tadic told the Vecernje Novosti newspaper.
"Kosovo will not become a member of the United Nations without Serbia's consent. This fact will persuade Kosovo officials who, sooner or later, will have to come back to the negotiating process."
Tadic said that Serbia must remain "patient and optimistic" and that its case on the legality of the independence declaration, put to the International Court of Justice, was "very solid."
"One thing is certain. A democratic Serbia will never again carry out a war, will not threaten its citizens nor those in the region," Tadic said.
"We want the best possible relations with the Albanians, despite the traumas of the past."
The International Court of Justice confirmed last week that it has received legal arguments from Serbia and Kosovo on the independence dispute, along with the written views of 35 U.N. members.
