Serbs begin work on reconstruction of houses in Brdjani

Following an agreement with the UN which ended clashes with Eulex police, Serbs of the Brdjani district began clearing the terrain on five locations in this part of northern Kosovska Mitrovica on Wednesday morning, preparing the plots for the reconstruction of their houses.

Mechanization has been engaged, and there is a very strong presence of members of the Kosovo Police Service (KPS), the EULEX Police, and KFOR in the district.

Two weeks ago, Serbs protested against the reconstruction of houses owned by ethnic Albanians in this district, demanding that their homes in this district of Kosovska Mitrovica should be repaired before the ethnic Albanians are allowed to return there, and also that the Serbs that were previously expelled return to Kosovo.

There are also destroyed houses belonging to Serbs in Brdjani, where ethnic Albanians began the reconstruction of their houses destroyed during the 1999 conflicts in Kosovo about a fortnight ago.

Around 2000 Serbs, including more than 500 children, now live in 146 houses in the district of Brdjani.

During the Serb protests over the past two weeks, EULEX Police used teargas against the demonstrators, and also stun bombs during the first days of protests.
