Kosovo Serbs block roads to Eulex vehicles

Kosovo Serbs selectively blocked the passage of Eulex vehicles on Wednesday in northern Kosovo, arguing that the EU mission is supporting the institutions of the unrecognized state of Kosovo by introducing customs duties at the Brnjak and Jarinje crossings with central Serbia.

They prevented five Eulex vehicles from reaching the crossings, while all other vehicles were allowed to pass.

The half-hour blockade was carried out without incidents.

The Leposavic and Zubin Potok municipalities reject any customs duties. Local businessmen are ready to pay VAT, but not to the unrecognized state of Kosovo, they said.

Eulex customs service chief Paul Acda said recently that all measures taken at adiminstrative crossings in northern Kosovo were coordinated with relevant Serbian ministries.

"Eulex  is not introducing customs control at the boundary with Serbia, but is only restoring it following arson at crossings immediately after Kosovo declared independence in February 2008", he said.

Eulex customs service started working at crossings in northern Kosovo last December 9.
