"We received today confirmation from the World Bank that the board of governors of the World Bank has passed a resolution on the admission of the Republic of Kosovo in this organisation," said Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

"This is successful for Kosovo, its institutions and people," Mr Thaci told reporters in Pristina.

The IMF offered Kosovo, one of the poorest regions of Europe, to become its 186th member last month.

"Having been admitted into the World Bank, we will get more alternatives, more possibilities and bigger economic aid. The membership of Kosovo in the World Bank automatically increases international investors' trust in Kosovo," Thaci said.

According to World Bank data, around half of Kosovo's two million residents live in poverty.

The jobless rate is around 40 per cent. Youth unemployment is more than 60 per cent.
