Serbia must have the final word on the status of Kosovo, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said ahead of his visit to Belgrade on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, many tragic mistakes were made during the last decade,  which was critical for the resolution of the problem of Kosovo", Medvedev said in an interview with the Belgrade daily "Vecernje novosti".

"Some of them were made deliberately as part of a plan to introduce an international practice of unilateral solutions", he underlined.

"Despite the attempts by the protectors of Kosovo's independence, they will not succeed in making it an irreversible process, in closing this issue", Russia's president warned.

"We believe that, step by step, we should prove that there are alternatives to legal self-will", he said.

"No one must claim that the Kosovo question is resolved without Serbia saying the final word", Medvedev said.

Russia's president said that Moscow will continue to support Serbia's proposals in search for the status of Kosovo.

"Given the complexity of the problem, this approach has shown to be efficient", Medvedev said.
