The support to the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence could have been avoided had the proposed new European Security Treaty been adopted, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Athens.

"Had this proposal been adopted earlier, I believe that a series of events, including last year's crisis in the Caucasus or the support to the unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence, could have been avoided", Lavrov said at the margins of the OSCE ministerial meeting.

Lavrov said that the proposal of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about the signing of the legally-binding Treaty on European Security was based on building a complete security system in the Euro-Atlantic region.
