Russia insists on joint international approach to Kosovo and other major world problems

Russia insists on joint settlement of all problems concerning the Treaty on the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), the National Missile Defense (NMD), the status of Kosovo, as well as the case of Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

Referring to both the Kosovo status and sanctions against Iran, Lavrov said that Moscow urged other big players on international political scene to settle major problems within the frameworks of the international law, rather than making unilateral political decisions, which could lead to renewed problems.

Lavrov's call for joint action was immediately backed by President Vladimir Putin's top envoy to the EU, Sergei Yasterzhembsky who, once again, voiced Russian support for the status of Kosovo which would be in line with principles of the international law.

"The EU claims that Kosovo is unique, but there is nothing unique about Kosovo for a number of unrecognized states, which have their own constitutions, institutions and budget", Yastrezhembsky said.

Moscow's envoy to the EU also voiced Russian concern that unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence could trigger similar moves in other countries, but said that the international community has the chance to come up with a solution which would not leave any of the parties humiliated.

Yastrezhembsky blasted U.S. stance which supports almost immediate recognition of Kosovo's independence.
