HRW: Status of minorities worsening in Kosovo

The rule of law in Kosovo is still weak despite some efforts of the EU police and legal mission and the position of the already fragile minorities keeps deteriorating, instead of improving, the latest report of Human Rights Watch (HRW) reads. Two years after the proclamation of independence, there is no improvement.

Despite its new authorities, the government in Pristina either wants to present in a better light the oversights in Kosovo in the field of human rights, or to blame the international services for the problems, the report states.

Little progress has been made in making those most responsible for the anti-minority protests in 2004 face justice, which is a decisive test of the legal system.

With the support of the EU, progress in the field of human rights and the rule of law is possible.

However, it will need greater efforts made by Brussels and Pristina in processing criminals who have committed serious crimes and greater expectations from the EU authorities in the fields of law and legislature, the HRW report stated.
