Ambassador Ihab Nasr, representative of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to the meeting of parliament's foreign affairs committee, said Egypt will not recognize Kosovo as an independent state before ICJ gives its advisory opinion on the legality of Kosovo's unilaterally proclaimed independence.

He said the stance adopted by Cairo emerges from the country's keenness on not accepting "it (the unilateral declaration of independence) as an example" for any agglomeration of people who share independent identity to establish an independent state unilaterally.

The United Nations General Assembly approved in October 2008 Serbia's request for an ICJ advisory opinion on the issue. The ICJ is expected to announce its opinion within two months.
