Russia urges pursuit of talks after December 10

The head of the Russian Parliament’s foreign policy committee Konstantin Kosachov has said that the negotiations on the future status of Kosovo should be extended past December 10, when the results of the process are to be discussed in the U.N. Security Council.

Kosachov went on to say that U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was obligated to present a proposal for the extension of the Kosovo talks, and that his position bound him to offer a new initiative for the continuation of the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina after that deadline.

"I must immediately say that Russia will unconditionally support such a proposal," Kosachov said.

He described Belgrade's example of relations between Hong Kong and China for the potential co-existence of a sovereign state and its separate part as "very interesting and extensive."

"If it were accepted, this solution would be extremely favorable, not just for Serbia and Kosovo, but for the international community as a whole, and could be applied in other parts of the world as well, wherever there are misunderstandings of this kind," Kosachov said.

"Besides, any kind of imposed solution for the future of Kosovo, outside the boundaries of international law, would most certainly have an impact on all other similar cases we encounter in Europe and the world today," Kosachov stressed.
