Tadic: International campaign to restore phones in Kosovo

Serbian President Boris Tadic said that Serbia would begin an international action for Serbs in Kosovo to be able to use the services of Serbian mobile phone networks after Kosovo Albanian authorities in Pristina removed the equipment of Belgrade-based mobile operators and about 100,000 Serbs have been cut off from the rest of the world. Kosovo Regulatory Agency for Telecommunications also destroyed equipment of the Serb radio station Kosma and regional Herc radio and television.

Tadic said that Belgrade would initiate the "broadest possible international action" in order for Serbs in Kosovo to be able to use the services of Serbian mobile phone operators.

He said that Serbia would demand an immediate reaction from international institutions.

"I am horrified by the reaction of EULEX, which is calmly watching the violation of human rights, because EULEX is responsible for the security of the citizens," Tadic said.

He said that he would be holding a very serious meeting with EULEX officials regarding this issue.

"We will not abandon the Serb population in Kosovo at any moment," Tadic said.

He said that Telekom Srbija is capable of restoring all of the destroyed and damaged equipment within a week's time.

Management of the Health Center in Gracanica has bitterly protested over the cutting of phone lines in central Kosovo, while warning that such inhuman and uncivilized acts are endangering people's lives.

In case of potential medical complications of death outcomes, patients cannot receive adequate medical assistance due to the interruption in communication, so the responsibility will be on those who have directly or indirectly contributed to the current situation, reads the statement.

Director of that institution doctor Rada Trajkovic has stated that the first aid ambulance service is completely blocked. She added that after the blockade of medicament deliveries to Serb communities on several occasions, along with delays in deliveries of medical equipment and sanitary material, this action is seen as the continuation of pressure against the Serb people in Kosovo.

The Association of Serbian Journalists (UNS) and its regional branch in Kosovo have condemned the destruction of television and radio transmitters in Kosovo.

"UNS and the Kosovo and Metohija Journalists' Society (DNKiM) have condemned the new vandalism of the Kosovo Regulatory Agency for Telecommunications, whose workers have been destroying broadcasting equipment of the Serb radio station Kosma," the UNS states.

UNS adds that the equipment of five radio stations that broadcast in Serbian and have licenses for working in Kosovo are located at the Beli Kamen transmitter in Brezovica. With the assistance of police, Agency workers have cut cables on the Kosma links and destroyed a generator worth about EUR 10,000.

Equipment of the Puls television station in Silovo was also destroyed when a transmitter was blown up several months ago.

Kosovo Albanian authorities claim that Serbia's cell phone networks within Kosovo were "unlicensed and illegal."
