Azimov: Opinion of ICJ not a justification for Kosovo "statehood"

The opinion of counsel of the International Court of Justice on whether the declaration of Kosovo independence is in line with the international law cannot be a justification for the "statehood" of the Province, stated permanent representative of Russia with OSCE Anvar Azimov.

He said that the issue of the international status of Kosovo remains unanswered, as well as that the proponents of the so-called statehood of Kosovo have no reason to gloat.

At the session of the Standing OSCE Council, Azimov has explained that the International Court of Justice did not approve of Kosovo secession from Serbia, but only assessed the declaration, thus distancing itself from the debate on the right of the Province to unilaterally secede from the state.

Azimov has reminded that in February 2008, when the Kosovo independence was proclaimed, Belgrade did not bomb anybody but was pledging exclusively for the negotiation on the status of the Province.

He has repeated the Russian stance on not recognizing the independence of Kosovo and the necessity to continue the talks between Belgrade and Pristina, based on UN Resolution 1244.
