"We want to do everything to achieve a coordinated and harmonized European stand," the chancellor said after a meeting with Prodi. She pointed out that the future solution should be "as harmonious as possible for both Serbia and Kosovo."
Germany and Italy want the negotiating process to run its course in as constructive a manner as possible and to avoid conflicts.
Prodi underscored that "Serbia must be told clearly that it has a future in the EU."
Germany on Monday warned the Kosovo Albanians not to take steps toward a unilateral declaration of independence.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that "many would be losers after such a move," adding that "a solution found through negotiations is better for all sides."
