Germany requests that Serbia gives up debate at UN

Top officials of Serbia shall request from German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle who is coming to Belgrade on Thursday, that the story on Kosovo between Belgrade and Brussels is postponed to after the session of the UN General Assembly in order to discuss the matter with ‘cool heads', ‘Blic' learns from a high state source.

According to that source Westerwelle is coming in the name of the ‘Quinta' countries to request that all parts of Serbian resolution related to Kosovo status are left out ‘what would imply that the status is the finished matter'.

‘If Serbia would accept requests set by Westerwelle, the German diplomacy chief shall offer easier path for the candidacy of Serbia for the EU membership. However, the offer says nothing when acceptance of the candidacy might take place', Blic source says.

‘Blic' source claims that Belgrade is counting on support by the Italians who are trying to ‘ease tension' in order to prevent further deterioration of relations between Serbia and the EU.

On the other hand, diplomatic sources in Brussels and in capitals of the leading EU members are not hiding dissatisfaction because Serbia has stubbornly continued insisting on its text of the resolution on Kosovo. ‘Blic' source from diplomatic circles says that Westerwelle's visit is the last attempt to moderate Serbia's stance. Brussels is, as said, losing patience and is even threatening with slowing down the process of European integration by Serbia.

Foreign diplomatic circles claim that Brussels does not object so much the very text of the resolution as it objects the fact that ‘Belgrade failed to stick to earlier reached agreement that it shall work on the text of the resolution together with the EU'.

‘In return for a more flexible stance, Belgrade might secure not only wide support to Kosovo Serbs by the EU, help to and security of the monasteries but a considerable degree of autonomy for the Serbs in Kosovo as well. That would be more or less implementation of Ahtisaari's plan although we are avoiding use that expression since we are aware how much it is rejected in Serbia', ‘Blic' source says adding that it is obvious that ‘less than ten people in control of Serbian police do not have ear' for the proposals made.
