The NATO-led KFOR officially on Monday handed over the guarding of the Serb Orthodox monastery Gracanica to the Kosovo police, KPS.

This was confirmed by deputy chief of the Gracanica police station Rama Krueziu.

KFOR and Kosovo police officials signed the handover papers earlier on Monday, he said.

The decision, however, does not apply to the Patriarchate of Pec and the monasteries of Visoki Decani and St. Archangels, which will remain under KFOR's protection.

The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) opposes the decision to place its religious monuments under Kosovo police protection.

The churches and monasteries were placed under protection as they were targeted by Kosovo's ethnic Albanians.
