Blic: Belgrade and EU closer to agreement over resolution

Agreement with the EU over change of Serbian resolution on Kosovo should be finished until next Tuesday, September 7 when Serbia President Boris Tadic and High EU representative for security and foreign affairs Catherine Ashton are to meet.

The goal is a text which basically would be Serbian resolution changed to sufficient extent to get support by all 27 EU members. That would, according to ‘Blic' source, make possible for the Serbian resolution to be adopted at the UN General Assembly.

Finding of a compromise solution is not an easy task at all. In previous months Serbia managed to get support by large number of countries thanks to the introductory sentence in which it is said that ‘unilateral secession is not acceptable'.

The most powerful countries of the world request that very sentence to be omitted.

Spanish Ambassador to Serbia Ignacio de Palacio Espana said yesterday that ‘the moment is extremely delicate' and that ‘satisfactory solution is being looked for' with European partners.

Slovakian Foreign Minister Mikulas Dzurinda told Slovakian SITA agency that he had not said that ‘Slovakia shall never recognize Kosovo' and that ‘the essence of Slovakian approach is that interest of Belgrade is also taken into account' and that ‘Serbia is given European perspective and helped in dialog with Pristina'. Victor Bostinaru, President of the European Parliament Board for Southeast Europe said yesterday that ‘Brussels should not blackmail Serbia but treat all countries in the same manner'.

‘Why humiliating Serbia? Neither Serbia deserves it nor should Europe humiliate any country before it joins the EU. Europe is based on values which are not in line with threats and insults', Bostinaru, European deputy from Romania, a country which has not recognized Kosovo, said.
