Checkpoints are being placed "each 50 meters", according to eyewitnesses.
NATO-led force in the province, KFOR, and its commander, German General Erhard Buehler, announced on Tuesday that the number of soldiers and checkpoints would be increased.
The goal of this, international officials said, was to increase the presence of KFOR, EULEX and Kosovo police in order to secure peace and security for all citizens.
EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, police chief in the north Udo Moeller said it was important to eradicate incidents and crime in northern Kosovo.
Meanwhile in Pristina, well-informed sources said all this was meant the public was being prepared for the arrest of "big fish", after a suspect in a murder case and illegal weapons possession was arrested yesterday.
Albanian language daily Koha Ditore quoted sources close to KPS who said EULEX special forces from Pristina and Urosevac were sent to the north in order to arrest "four persons who are seen as criminal leaders in northern Kosovo".
