Ban and Solana discuss future Kosovo moves

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and the European Union security and foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Wednesday discussed further moves aimed at defining the future status of Kosovo, including the forthcoming debate in the UN Security Council and possible EU engagement in the troubled province.

Ban and Solana met just hours after the last internationally-mediated attempt to bring Belgrade and Pristina closer to the mutually acceptable solution, held in the Austrian town of Baden, ended without an agreement.

"Secretary General and Mr. Solana discussed the upcoming Kosovo-related process", said UN's spokesman Brendan Varma, without further elaborating the essence of the meeting.

However, Western diplomats told KosovoCompromise.com that the two officials discussed a set of moves which will
follow the Contact Group Troika's report on December 10, and the debate in the Security Council which will, most probably, follow a week later.

In addition, Ban and Solana continued the discussion on the future EU's civil and security missions in Kosovo, designed to replace the existing UNMIK administration.

Both UN chief and the EU's top diplomat warned that Kosovo might enter a rather fragile phase once international mediators present their report on four-months-long negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina.
