Russia Calls for Continuation of Kosovo Talks

Russian ambassador to Belgrade Alexander Alexeyev said Thursday that Russia was ready to push for the continuation of negotiations and the finding of a compromise solution for Kosovo's status.

"Right now I am not ready to talk about what Russia would do if Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, but that would be the worst solution," Alexeyev said.

According to him, "a compromise solution reached through an agreement" was the only acceptable solution and "the only solution for South-East Europe."

Alexeyev pointed out that Dec. 10 was only the date when the Contact Group's troika would submit its report to the U.N. Security Council on the Kosovo negotiations, but was not the date for the choosing of a final status solution.

Asked whether Russia was being pressured into changing its position on the future status of Kosovo, Alexeyev underscored that no pressure influenced Russia's positions, adding that those positions were "highly principled."
