Kosovo back on UN Security Council’s agenda on Dec. 19 or 21

UN Security Council will restart the Kosovo-related debate in mid-December, following the Contact Group Troika’s report to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon scheduled for Dec. 10, UN officials said Friday.

Depending on technical details, the next Security Council's meeting on Kosovo will be scheduled for either Dec. 19 or 21, amid a growing controversy on a future European Union mission that would replace UN administrators in the troubled Serbian province.

The US-EU-Russian Troika will present its report on the last round of talks on Dec. 10 or several days earlier, according to diplomats in New York, setting up the stage for a next round of top-level discussions aimed at defining the international community's future role in Kosovo.

But, the fate of consultations within the Security Council remains unclear as Russia, and to a certain extent China, seem little enthusiastic about the prospects of the process, considering the fact that Serbia and Kosovo Albanians once again failed to reach a compromise solution to the problem and remain deeply opposed as to Kosovo's future status.

Several key Western nations led by the U.S. hope that the Security Council might at least open the way for deployment of EU civilian and security missions in Kosovo that would replace its UN-run predecessors.
