Kosovo officials shielded by U.S.

Australian analyst Whit Mason says that CoE investigator Dick Marty's report shows that the highest Pristina officials were above the law thanks to the U.S.

Mason said that the U.S. did not consciously support the crimes in Kosovo and did not wish to see it remain a 'banditocracy,' but it was what their policy in Kosovo led to, by trying to establish stability without changing the situation in the field.

"Since the very beginning, the public was under the impression that ethnic Albanians are the victims, and that all those who fought to free ethnic Albanians were innocent and therefore did not do things which we now know they did," the analyst with the Australian Institute of International Affairs stressed.

He said it was exceptionally difficult to carry out criminal proceedings in Kosovo, as the foreign public was not well acquainted with that environment, and added that it was very difficult to protect witnesses in Kosovo, because it was a small territory where everyone knew each other.
