Slovakia against Kosovo’s unilateral independence

Slovakia is against Kosovo’s potential unilateral independence and will not acknowledge unilateral moves, as it favors the full implementation of the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244, Slovak Foreign Minister Jan Kubis said in Belgrade on Monday.

After a meeting with Serbian officials, Kubis said that Slovakia, as a member of the EU, NATO and the U.N. Security Council, was interested in regional security and stability, and in that sense advocated a solution for Kosovo reached through negotiations.

"We believe that the solution must be negotiated, not a unilateral act," the minister said.

Kubis said that the mediating troika's report would be "one step further toward finding a solution."

"We believe that the EU should now more than ever engaged in the stability and development plan in Kosovo. We think it is high time that an EU mission was sent to Kosovo, which, of course, can only be done based on a new U.N. Security Council resolution," Kubis said.
