"We are grateful because, during the talks, the Kosovo Albanians and the Government of Serbia have clearly stated that they do not intend to use violence. We expect all sides to show the relevant level of restraint as we move forward", State Department spokesman Tom Casey said.

Casey also said there were "important difficulties and many emotions" for both sides, but that the US expect the discussion to continue.

"But, I repeat, I believe that the outcome of this is clear", Casey said, pointing out that for the Washington, a lack of a negotiated outcome would mean the road to the implementation of the independence plan set out by former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, despite its earlier failure in the UN Security Council.

"Clearly, intensive discussions will follow after the resolution of the process led by the Troika and we will see where this will all bring us", Casey said.
