Lavrov: Russia’s position in the UN SC to follow resolution 1244

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday that Russia's further position in the U.N. on Kosovo's status would be based on international law and the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244, which guarantees Serbia's sovereignty over the province.

Lavrov said that at this stage, Moscow gave "a very high mark" to the Troika's overall work.

He said that Belgrade had presented a whole line of concrete proposals, "not just the ones opening the way for a serious debate on the future status of Kosovo which would suit both Belgrade and Pristina, but proposals that confirm the necessity of continuing the talks."

According to the Russian minister, it is now necessary for Pristina to take a step towards a compromise, but that step is being "blocked" by a number of Western countries, which keep saying that Kosovo's independence is inevitable.

All of Russia's actions will be "based on the solid foundation of international law, including the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244. I cannot take responsibility on my own and guess how the other countries will act regarding the developments around Kosovo," Lavrov said.
