Wallonia in fear of independence of Kosovo

Parliamentarians from all political parties in Wallonia, the southern French-speaking part of Belgium, have expressed grave concern about the independence of Kosovo, fearing it could lead to a “domino effect” on Belgium, which northern, Dutch-speaking region Flanders, seeks paths towards separation.

"We have to stop the proliferation of new, artificial states in Europe", said a deputee of the leading Wallonia party, the Reformist Movement, Francois-Xavier de Donnea.

The deputee of the Ecolo party Josy Dubie said she feared that an "infernal machine" was being set in motion, while the socialist Patrick Moriau warned about "separatism in the heart of Europe".

This is the first time that deputees from Wallonia speak about Kosovo status.

Belgium has been facing one of the deepest political crises in its history due to differences between Wallonia and Flanders on the future of the country which have been preventing the creation of a new government six months after elections.
