Lavrov: EU-US misintepreting of 1244 is breaking international law

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned on Tuesday that the EU and the US were seeking a Kosovo status solution on a basis which is breaching international law.

"There are attempts to interpret resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council as if it did not forbid the declaration of independence of the province (...) in reality, the resolution does not allow for a solution which would not be based on a negotiated agreement between the two sides", Lavrov said.

He underlined there could be "no double interpertation, and attempts to do it would mean breaching international law".

"Those who are blocking negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina are taking an enormous responsibility", Lavrov warned.

He said the work of the Troika showed that direct talks were not hopeless.

"If the Pristina leadership had not been taken by the hand and told what it ought to do, I am convinced that a solution would be found", the Russian foreign minister said.
