Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister said on Sunday the new government would try to save whatever it can concerning Kosovo, but that the people should know what kinds of difficulties there would be.

He told TV that Serbia had received very difficult requirements for the start of the EU accession talks, but that there was a possibility the situation could improve for Serbia within that framework.

"After the presidential election, as an envoy of (Tomislav) Nikolic, I met in Germany with the most important German officials and did my best to get the best possible conditions for the country. We can impove the situation for Serbia within the given framework, but our reach is limited," Vucic noted.

The situation can be improved by acting within the given framework, but it "will not be ideal or pretty for the people of Serbia," he said.

"I do not wish to fire off patriotic statements, because neither can I do it nor is it time for something like that. There will be no wonderful news. We have to tell the people what kind of hardships and trouble we will face," Vucic remarked.

He said that Serbia's former president Boris Tadic did not tell the truth when he said the old government had not been presented with the requirement of having to reach a legally binding normalization of relations with Kosovo before the start of the accession talks.

"Tadic did not tell the truth about the issue. He was famliar with it and he very intelligently stated tha it had not been given as a condition to get the date, but as a condition to join. But I will point out that (Andreas) Schohenhoff and (Hans-Joakim) Falenski said here it was a requirement for the 3rd and final phase, for joining. By the way, Tadic was presented with a more difficult requirement for joining the EU than we," Vucic said.

Germany's opinion is very important and "those who underestimate German conditions are not honest with their people," he stated.
