Russia, China, South Africa, Indonesia and Congo call for pursuit of Kosovo talks

Several permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council have expressed their clear preference for the pursuit of Kosovo talks during Wednesday’s session of the UN top body.

Russia and China, but also South Africa, Indonesia and Congo, have voiced their preference for such steps, while the US and EU members issued a statement confirming their view that talks had been "exhausted".

Such an outcome brings back the "rapport de force" in the Security Council back to its June-July sessions when the Martti Ahtisaari plan was rejected.

Two new strong supporters of the continuation of talks and of a compromise solution are to join the Security Council on January 1, 2008 - namely, Vietnam and Libya.
