“EU accession should not be conditioned with Kosovo”

Serbian parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Sunday that Serbia’s EU accession should not be tied to a solution for the Kosovo issue.

He stressed this during a meeting with Inter-parliamentary Union (UPI) Secretary General Anders Johnsson in Quebec.

He noted that a condition referring to recognition of other states did not exist in the criteria for the EU accession and that Serbia should not be asked to recognize Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence.

Stefanović said that Belgrade saw the support to Pristina as an encouragement to continue the persecution of Serbs from Kosovo and expressed concern for the safety of non-Albanian population in the southern Serbian province.

He also informed Johnsson about the work of the Serbian parliament and steps that would be taken in order to strengthen its role.
