The protesters used cars to block both lanes and the gathering went by without any incidents, Tanjug's correspondent has reported.

Last week, the Kraljevo District Court ordered 30 days detention for Slavoljub Jović and launched an investigation against him on the suspicion that he tried to kill KFOR troops in Rudare, the municipality of Zvecan, on June 1, 2012.

He is accused of wounding two soldiers with several shots fired at close range and jeopardizing the lives of the other soldiers present.

The charges against him include aggravated attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearms and explosive materials.

President of the Serb National Council in Kosovska Mitrovica Nebojsš Jović said Tuesday's gathering in Rudare was a prelude to a big protest Serbs would stage Friday in northern Mitrovica.

Jović, the brother of the arrested Slavoljub, said the citizens were demanding that Slavoljub Jović be released pending trial and that their intention was not to influence the proceedings before the Serbian courts in any way.

"On the contrary, we are convinced of his innocence and we want the protest to show whether the state has the strength to call KFOR to account for the attempted mass murder of citizens on June 1 in Rudare and the violence at Jarinje and Jagnjenica," said Jovic.

He appealed to members of KFOR and EULEX to refrain from any moves that could destabilize the north.
