Russia: Kosovo Cannot Become Member of U.N.
Kosovo cannot gain a seat in the U.N., even if the EU and the U.S. recognize its independence, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko said.

Yakovenko said that it was "impossible" for Kosovo to get a chair in the U.N., "in line with the still valid U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244."
He pointed out that it was also "impossible to make any changes without a decision by the U.N."
The Russian diplomat said that Kosovo would be the topic of a U.N. Security Council session in January. He added that the session would be devoted to the U.N. secretary general's regular report, but would also be "another opportunity for the sides to present their positions."
Yakovenko underscored that Russia could not let any project, which solved the Kosovo problem in a unilateral manner, "pass" through the U.N. Security Council.
"If things keep running according to the unilateral scenario, it could lead to destabilization of the province and spur separatists in many regions of the world. This also means that Russia cannot let any project of the sort pass through the U.N. Security Council," Yakovenko added.
