Serbs want talks with KFOR, EULEX and UNMIK

During a session of the municipal assembly, Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Krstimir Pantic stated that the invitation to the meeting was sent to EULEX Head Xavier Bout de Marnhac, KFOR Commander Folker Halbauer and UNMIK chief Farid Zarif.

"We sent a note to the KFOR commander, EULEX chief and head of UNMIK in which we called for a joint meeting to prevent aggravation of the security situation in the village of Brdjani, northern Kosovska Mitrovica," Pantic said.

He noted that the call was sent with a wish to find a solution to the situation caused by the Albanian attempt to build new houses in northern Mitrovica municipality of Brdjane.

Pantic assessed that the political and security situation in the city aggravated and that there is a risk of it getting out of hand, and added that the events in Brdjani constitute an attempt of a forceful change in the ethnic structure of the population, and this is not the first time something of the sort happened.

"What we see at work these days is an attempt to build 172 housing facilities for veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army who never lived here and a few Albanians who lived there before 1999," he noted.

Pantic accused UNMIK of maintaining, as he said, a passive stand and failing to react and prevent illegal construction.

Kosovska Mitrovica mayor called don everyone to give their contribution to activities aimed at defusing the situation and resolving problems in the city.

On Thursday, EULEX released that it deployed its troops in Brdjani and spokeswoman of the EU mission in Kosovo Irina Gudeljevic called on all relevant sides to refrain from any violent actions.
