Humiliation for Serbian victims

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said Thursday that the acquittal of former commander of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) Ramus Haradinaj before the ICTY was rendered without regard for justice and law.

Just like previous decisions made by The Hague Tribunal, this one will also encourage separatism, complicate attempts to establish peace in the region, undo previous efforts in the normalization of Belgrade-Pristina relations and increase Euroscepticism among the Serbian people, Nikolic pointed out.

"Unfortunately, our expectation that The Hague Tribunal will acquit Ramus Haradinaj, who was charged with murders, cruel treatment, inhumane acts and violation of the laws and customs of war, all committed against Albanian, Serb and Roma civilians in the prison camp of the so-called OVK in Jablanica in 1998, came true" says a statement released by the president's press service.

The latest ICTY decision is not in keeping either with the law and justice, or with basic postulates on which this international court should be based.

The Tribunal, apparently established disregarding the international law, was formed in order to prosecute the Serbian people. All this should lead to achievement of the set goals, which are well-known to the Serbian public, Nikolic pointed out.

According to him, Haradinaj's acquittal indicates poor coping of the international mission in Kosovo, ignorance of the mentality of the majority of the population and inability to protect 29 witnesses vital for reaching an incriminating verdict.

"No one will be held responsible for heinous crimes against Kosovo Serbs. Such verdicts encourage separatism, complicate attempts to establish peace in the region, undo previous efforts in the normalization of Belgrade-Pristina relations and increase Euroscepticism among the Serbian people," Nikolic concluded.

Head of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo-Metohija Aleksandar Vulin stated on Thursday that the decision of the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to acquit former commander of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army Ramus Haradinaj is an unfortunate day for justice and that it will affect the continuation of the dialogue with Pristina which will be aggravated.
"The ICTY ruling confirmed that the Serb property was robbed but it did not point to those who robbed it; it also showed that Serbs were kidnapped but it did not identify those who kidnapped them; it confirmed that Serbs were murdered but it did not show who murdered them. This is a sad day for justice," Vulin told the press.

Rasim Ljajic, the president of Serbia's National Council for Cooperation with the ICTY, said Thursday that, after the scandalous acquittal of former commander of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army Ramus Haradinaj, Serbia is three more steps away from the process of regional reconciliation.
"This scandalous verdict means that we are three more steps away from the process of reconciliation in the region, but it also means new pain for the victims and their families and another blow for international justice and law," Ljajic told the press.
