Serbs to spend second night at Jarinje

The work on the Jarinje administrative crossing in northern Kosovo did not continue on Wednesday because of a peaceful protest by Serbs, who said they would stay there for the second night in a row to prevent setting up a border with central Serbia.

Northern Kosovo Serbs have been gathering a the crossing since Monday and will spend the night in their vehicles and the tent that was set up on Tuesday.

Local officials said the people would stay there until the Serbian government provides written guarantees regarding the operation of the future integrated border crossings in northern Kosovo.

Head of the Kosovska Mitrovica municipality Krstimir Pantic said a meeting between Serb officials from northern Kosovo and the Serbian government will be held on Thursday most probably.

"Once we get the written guarantees, we will notify deputies, talk to the people, and if the guarantees are signed, there is no reason for the people to stay at Jarinje and prevent the implementation of the agreement, because all our demands will have been fulfilled essentially," Pantic noted.

Traffic through Jarinje is not blocked and EULEX is controlling it.

KFOR has set up a checkpoint on the Kosovo side stopping some vehicles for a search.

The Kosovo Serbs are gethered at a location that is within central Serbia and the Serbian police is present there.

Serbian Radical Party Vice President Nemanja Sarovic, Democratic Party of Serbia Vice President Nenad Popovic and MPs Peter Petkovic and Jovan Palalic arrived at the crossing on Wednesday to support the protesters.
